About 10 members of the Akron Atmosphere Brigade converged on Sears at Chapel Hill Mall today. We tried to speak to the management of the store, who clearly wanted nothing to do with us. Upon being told to leave the store we did. Several members covertly did literature drops throughout the store. We then met in the mall near the entrance to Sears. We held signs asking others to help in our campaign against Sears and passed out postcards to shoppers while doing some chants. We were successful in reaching out to the Manager of Operations, who came out into the mall and spoke to us. He understood our goal and respected our efforts. After about 15 minutes, mall security came and told us we had to leave the mall. We could continue our efforts standing on the sidewalks out at the street. As a group we decided that standing on the sidewalk would have little to no effect on those driving by the mall. Our message was more verbal than anything. The shoppers were not aware of Sears' refusal to use recycled paper. They were in some cases disgusted. Only a few people threw the postcards back at us. Overall, I think today was a success. Even reaching out to one person makes a difference.
